Retiring in Mexico

There are many popular retirement destination choices for baby boomers in the US and Canada. Southern locations have long been retirement havens, mostly because it seems as we get older, we become less tolerant of the chilling cold and gray skies of many northern industrial cities where our careers forced us to stay in our younger years. Also, with predictably fewer days ahead of us than behind us, we tend to have a greater appreciation for a day in the sun, fishing, playing golf or the many other active lifestyle hobbies. Now, with recent economic circumstances changing the retirement plans of millions of Canadian and US residents, people are starting to take a broader assessment of their options. Latin America is becoming a very viable option for many ‘Norte Americanos’, because of the relatively much lower cost of living, excellent healthcare, availability of modern conveniences, perfect tropical climate, rich culture, beautiful coastal waters and the lifestyle activities that they provide.  There are many Latin American countries that are popular with ‘gringo’ retirees these days, but none are more attractive than Mexico. There are many factors that have contributed to Mexico being selected two years in a row as International Living’s number one choice among international retirement destinations. In addition to its economic stability, beautiful beaches, mountains, Mayan ruins, gorgeous turquoise waters, fabulous cuisine, and almost perpetual daily sunshine, Mexico is convenient. There are many easy and direct flights from Canada and the US to Puerto Vallarta, including daily nonstop flights from Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New Jersey, New York, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and St. Louis.

And Mexico is safe. Away from the border towns like Juarez being fought over by the drug gangsters, Mexico is actually safer than most American cities. If you factor out the drug related crime, the per capita crime rate is lower than in the states!

No matter what your budget is, your retirement dollars will permit you to live a better lifestyle in Mexico than north of the border. If you’re struggling to make ends meet in an expensive US or Canadian city, you can expect that you would be able to live a lovely middle-class US lifestyle in the Puerto Vallarta area. If you have a middle class lifestyle north of the border, and are thinking about Mexico, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you afford to buy a beachfront or ocean-view home with domestic help and a guest room for all of the relatives who will want to come and visit. With burgeoning government deficit spending, looming inevitable inflation and increasing taxation all but a forgone conclusion, it’s time to take control of your life and make a plan to live on your own financial terms. You can not only stretch your nest-egg in Mexico, but also improve your lifestyle.

There are many cities in Mexico with sizeable enclaves of gringos, where the community infrastructure is advanced, tourist security is ensured through extensive police representation, English is widely spoken and understood (including English-language newspapers and magazines), and healthcare and other services are tailored to the expat taste, budget and lifestyle. US and Canadian medicines are widely available as equivalents in Mexico and are generally much cheaper than in the states and don’t require a doctor’s prescription. Puerto Vallarta is one of the best choices in Mexico. There are ATMs, Walmarts, Costcos and Home Depots. There are English language movie theatres, many fabulous golf courses, satellite TV, high-speed internet and almost all other comforts you’ve come to rely on.

No matter what your age, if you’re feeling the financial squeeze of living in the US and Canada; Are frustrated that your retirement plans have been put on hold; If you’re thinking that life’s too short to live in a congested, chilly city and to work until it seems that life has passed you by, then register now for our next PV Discovery Week and see what the buzz is all about
